Sow, Grow and Farm
In the Sow, Grow and Farm project, we are going to be learning about allotments in the United Kingdom and how the government encouraged people to have them to support food rationing during the Second World War. We will have the opportunity to learn about farming in the United Kingdom and the techniques used in modern farming, including the challenges that farmers face. We will learn about the benefits of eating seasonally and about the pros and cons of importing food. We will also learn about world farming and how the different climate zones affect where different foods can be grown.
During the topic, we have:
* Explored the factors of a successful allotment, such as having a close water source, parking, and fencing for security and studied how they were used during WW2 due to food shortages.
* We have looked at different types of farming in the UK and compared which type of land is more appropriate for certain types of farming
* Understood the different challenges that farmers face, such as pests and droughts
* Explored farming around the world, for example, coffee farming in Peru
* Understood the importance of Fairtrade and created leaflets to inform others about this
* Used maps and atlases to explore different climate zones and understood why certain crops only grow in certain places
