Relaxation Techniques

What are relaxation based wellbeing skills ?

These are techniques that can help us to feel calmer, less stressed and less anxious. They are processes that help reduce the impact of stress on your mind and body and can help youto cope better with life overall. These techniques have been shown to have positive health benefits such as:

  •  reducing heart rates
  •  reducing the production of the “stress hormone” cortisol feeling more confident
  •  reducing blood pressure
  •  improving concentration and mood
  •  better sleeping patterns.

There are lots of different kinds of relaxation techniques that you can try out. Lots of people find these helpful particularly when they are feeling overwhelmed, stressed or anxious.

A few different types of relaxation techniques are:

  • Slowing down your breathing
  • Progressive Muscle Relaxation
  • Guided Visualisation

There are a range of relaxation apps which you may wish to try which you can find  including the free NHS Chill Panda app.

Go Noodle is an excellent resource to support you with relaxation exercises. There is a channel on their called 'Flow.' Children are able to access these short exercises independently. A great way to support sleeplessness in children:
