Year 6 had an interesting 7 weeks learning about the Victorians! We started our topic by having a Victorian day where we found out about super-strict schools by travelling back in time to a Victorian classroom. The children quickly learnt why it was important to be on your best behaviour though, as punishments are unquestionably terrible!
Year 6 discover a time when great minds, new thoughts and ingenious inventors created so many things we take for granted today: the electric light bulb, the telephone and even the first flushing loo! The children even got to make their own Victorian twist toy!
We also researched and designed posters about Victoria when she was a Queen and Albert when he was Prince Consort. Year 6 found out that some people lived in slums while others prospered. Based on the children's research we also created our own Victorian Slum Village! Towards the end of this topic, the children took on the role of an important reformer and present good inventions to the Queen to gain the support of a wealthy sponsor!
