Geography

Intent

At Goldenhill Primary Academy we provide a high quality Geography curriculum that has been prioritised for our learners and to progress their conceptual knowledge. The Geography curriculum has been designed to develop children’s curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

We believe that our Geography curriculum helps to provoke and answer questions about natural and human worlds and their place within the world. Therefore, we commit ourselves to providing children with opportunities to investigate and make enquiries about their local area of Stoke on Trent within the curriculum but also investigating different types of countries from across the world. This allows the children to develop a sense of who they are, their heritage and what makes the local area unique.

The curriculum that we provide allows for plenty of opportunities to develop a range of investigation and problem solving skills that can transfer into other curriculum areas but also build upon previous knowledge and skills that have been taught in previous year groups.

Implementation

Throughout the academy, geography is taught as part of a half-termly or termly topic, which progresses the children’s knowledge, and skills that are stated in the National Curriculum. We have made sure that the curriculum is taught through vertical learning that interacts throughout the year groups in our academy.

At the start of the topic children receive, a knowledge organiser, which outlines knowledge (including vocabulary), all children must aim to master and apply in lessons.  The children also receive a high quality of Geography lessons that plan for progression and depth concentrating on the geographical skills and knowledge suited to the age group.

Trips and visiting experts are provided for the children that enhance the learning experience and provide experiential knowledge to the curriculum.    Appropriate curriculum themed home learning tasks are also given which children complete with adults at home that will include Geography. The children are also given the opportunity to partake in a geography based after school club.

Impact

The impact and measure of our geography curriculum is to ensure that children at Goldenhill Primary Academy are equipped with geographical skills and knowledge that will enable them to progress into Key Stage 3 as confident geographers and for life in modern Britain beyond the walls of Goldenhill Primary Academy.

At Goldenhill Primary Academy, we strive to create a collaborative ethos for learning by providing investigative and enquiry based learning opportunities in Geography. If children are keeping up with the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress.

Children will have a celebration of learning at the end of each topic called an exit point this will demonstrates progression across the school through their organised exit experience.
