Year 1 loved the Childhood topic in the Autumn Term.
We learnt about significant events from each decade, explored childhood artefacts from the 1950's, created timelines and compared childhood now to childhood in the 1950's. We were very interested in the jobs, transport and games and entertainment in the 50's.
We discussed the question 'Would you rather be a child today or in the 1950's?' Some of us said today because we have better technology and can play on more games on iPads and consoles. Other children said the 1950's because children played in the street and marbles was a fun game. Lots us decided that we wouldn't like to get up to change the channel on the TV but would have loved riding in a passenger car on a motorbike.
During our adventure into Childhood....
The children will learn words and phrases related to the passage of time. They will explore artefacts to help them to understand childhood in the past and how childhood has changed over time. They will explore the six stages of life and explore timelines. Everyday life in the 1950s will be explored. The children will use maps to explore how places have changed over time and highlight any similarities or differences between childhood today and childhood in the 1950s. At the end of the project, they will create knowledge organisers for children who are about to study the topic of childhood and complete a writing piece to answer the question. Would I rather be a child today or in the 1950's and why?
